“Gateway to Syracuse” project completed three months ahead of schedule

Syracuse, NY According to governor Andrew Cuomo, the $11.8 million “Gateway to Syracuse” Interchange 36 replacement project has been completed three months ahead of schedule. The Central New York project incorporates a complete replacement of the old overpass connecting I-81 with the New York State Thruway with a new bridge that will serve as a safe, long-lasting direct link between the two major transportation arteries. The project complements the state’s record $27 billion investment in roads and bridges, primarily in Upstate.

“The new Gateway to Syracuse is a shining example of the remarkable work that is being done to improve infrastructure across Upstate New York,” said governor Cuomo. “New York is renowned for our innovative infrastructure design, and this is one of many projects that will ensure safe and reliable travel for our motorists.”

The new overpass is a three lane bridge that includes two lanes from the Thruway (I-90) eastbound ramp to Interstate 81 and one lane from Interstate 81 to the Thruway (I-90) eastbound. The replacement bridge and ramps were designed to last long-term, reduce congestion, and create safer road conditions for motorists. This project was completed in accordance with governor Cuomo’s “Drivers First” initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists to ensure that disruptions are minimal to drivers at highway and bridge work zones across the state.

The contractor for this project, Cold Spring Construction Co. of Akron, was able to use an on-site batch plant to produce concrete, which allowed for a consistent, high-quality mix and aided in significantly reducing the timeline for construction. The new design of Interchange 36 features a two-span, continuous steel plate girder bridge with a concrete deck. The metalized weathering steel girders provide a durable bridge that requires minimal maintenance throughout its lifespan.
