2023 Women in Construction: Julie Yun, Suffolk Construction
What was a pivotal point in your career? During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare management and construction were deemed essential services in New York. We aimed to construct safe and efficient spaces for hospitals, as quickly as possible, while continuing with our ongoing projects.

In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Across all of its divisions, Hylan’s business continues to grow and I am extremely proud of my ability to rethink the way I do things to accommodate the growth. In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Last year, I had what I consider to be dual successes. The first is in New York City while working with NYCSCA, where I oversaw the fast-track design AND construction administration of a 3-K facility in Brooklyn to open in time for the upcoming 2023 school year.

In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Within the past year at LMJ I was promoted to assistant project manager and given the ability to grow with the firm. In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? One of the most exciting projects I recently completed was the conversion of an existing office building located at 730 Fifth Ave., to a new state-of-the art, luxury Aman Brand Hotel. What was a pivotal point in your career? I started my career working for the NYC District Council of Carpenters Benefit Funds as an auditor. After passing my NYS Certified Public Accountant exam I went to work in public accounting and later in the financial services industry. Which professional associations or organizations would you recommend to women who are starting out in the AEC industry? It’s extremely important to get involved with organizations such as NAWIC and WIRED which focus on empowering women in the industry. Women are naturally exceptional networkers and should be capitalizing on that innate ability.
