Herbert S. Newman and Partners receives 2007 AIA Conn. Award

Herbert S. Newman and Partners of New Haven, Conn., received a 2007 AIA Connecticut Award for its design of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges New Residence Halls. Herbert S. Newman and Partners was the design architect and SWBR Architects of Rochester was the architect of record. The cost of the dormitory project was $9 million. The two new residence halls, North Residence Hall and de Cordova Hall, join two existing buildings to form a new landscaped residential quadrangle consistent with the existing family of academic and athletic quadrangles at the colleges. Peter Newman, principal-in-charge, said, "By placing the two residence halls opposite each other, we created a pedestrian court that encourages a dialogue between the buildings and the residents. Transparent circulation cores and vertically stacked open lounges stimulate this visual dialogue and reveal the internal and external lives of this new residential village." Totaling 174 beds between the two halls, the buildings were designed with student life in mind.
