Smith of MJ Peterson: "Prepare for the unexpected"

Name: Dorothy "Stahlnecker" Smith Title: Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker Company Name: MJ Peterson Real Estate Years in Commercial Real Estate: 35 In the last 12 months, which project, transaction, honor or accomplishment are you most proud of and why? The transaction I am most proud of is the sale of over 800 apartment units for $40 million in the Western New York area. I must admit that it was a very exhilarating experience for me. I was glad to be able to work with the buyer and seller to make sure every detail was attended to and that the transaction was able to close. What were your biggest fears when you started out in your profession? When I started in my profession, my biggest fear was what I didn't know. I turned that fear into an opportunity to learn, taking as many courses as I could. I took classes in everything from appraisals to financing. I have continued with this philosophy throughout my career and learning is always at the top of my list of things to do. What is your favorite quote? My favorite quote is: "Prepare for the unexpected." This quote from my father has really helped me from the very beginning. I've been in the commercial real estate industry for 35 years and I enjoy the fact that every day is filled with something new. You never know what challenges each transaction may present, so I always make sure to prepare for the unexpected. What social media and/or face to face networking activities do you find most beneficial professionally? Several years ago I began blogging. It has helped me to be able to express myself in my work. I am able to reach people all across the country and make connections that could have never happened otherwise. My writing ability improved 200% and so did my confidence. It is a very rewarding part of my life which has benefitted me professionally, as well as personally.
