Often associated with historic or culturally significant structures, adaptive reuse has been employed as a land use and real estate strategy to combat urban sprawl, promote sustainable design, and revitalize underutilized commercial or industrial zones.

How have you navigated obstacles to achieve success in your career?
Through hard work and persistence. English was not my native language, so when I first arrived in the U.S., I had a difficult time understanding my study materials. In order to succeed, I knew I had to work twice as hard and study twice as long compared to my classmates. I ended up graduating with honors and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society along with seven other members in my class. Using the same strategy, I obtained my architecture registration, LEED AP and Interior Design certifications.

How do you play your strengths to your advantage in your career?
My drivers have always been to be results oriented and knock things out of the park, and to be a great listener but never a “yes” person. It has been of equal importance to me to retain my humility. I don’t believe bravado has ever won the real race. Taking a genuine interest in clients and people is so much more fulfilling and makes servicing people that much better.

What trends are you seeing so far this year?
The trends I’m seeing in the design of business workplaces is a desire for open plan design which creates a sense of community by incorporating communal work tables and encourage collaboration between employees. Employers want to create an exciting and stimulating environment for their employees.

What trends are you seeing so far this year?
My work focuses on the hospitality industry. I’m seeing an increase in the emergence of brands, be it hotels, assisted living centers or traditional building management companies. Each market segment strives to stand out from the crowd through use of unique yet memorable names, decorative design, and updated yet functional products throughout their properties

How do you play your strengths to your advantage in your career?
Visualization is a strength of mine that helps guide the design process much easier. Once the initial conversation with a client occurs to discuss their wants and needs, a visual begins to form in my mind of what the final design may entail. This allows for a more efficient process when materials and FF&E must be selected.

What trends are you seeing so far this year?
Private owners are pursuing building efficiency at a higher rate as they are seeing the high yield in savings that is difficult to attain in other building capital expenditure projects. We are seeing more building owners utilize the positioning and savings of LED conversion projects to offset much needed mechanical upgrade projects such as boiler and AC repairs that have far longer payback cycles.

How do you play your strengths to your advantage in your career?
I use my excellent communication skills to develop relationships with peers and clients. Clients enjoy working with me because I can effectively convey any issues that may arise and propose a resolution. My calm and clear-headed approach to speaking with clients gives them confidence that our team can tackle any challenges that come our way.

What trends are you seeing so far this year?
I am seeing more cultural and institutional projects and less opportunities in the luxury residential market. The luxury residential market seems to be more cautious at the moment, yet mid-market rate units are doing very well.
What do you do for fun?
I love cooking and baking for family and friends. There’s nothing like enjoying a great meal with people you care about.
