During the last 10 years of your career, which professional accomplishment, honor or achievement was most meaningful to you and why?
I am the recipient of the 2011 AIA New York State President's Award for my contributions to the profession. Volunteering time and expertise to the architectural profession has been at the forefront of my career, so it's an honor to be recognized by my peers for my efforts. I am very proud to have been the partner-in-charge on the design and construction of the College of Human Ecology building at Cornell University, my alma mater, and the renovation of Warren Hall. I am also quite proud of my work on the master plan and the first four buildings for Riverwalk at Roosevelt Island. It was my first large-scale master plan to be realized.
Which project, deal or transaction was the "game changer" in the advancement of your career during the last 10 years?
My "game changer" project is Riverdale Terrace, a 7-story, 59-unit assisted living residence located in the Bronx for the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale. Previously, I was mostly involved with planning work, and Riverdale Terrace was my first time I managed a project from design through completion.
How do you contribute to your company and / or the industry?
Throughout my career I have been actively involved in many civic organizations on a city and state level, and helped clarify the formulation of new zoning regulations which have fostered NYC-wide growth and renewal. It's a professional and personal passion of mine to share my knowledge and expertise with the architectural and planning industry, as well as educational institutions on how to build better communities.
What advice would you give to women just starting out in commercial real estate?
My advice is to be a generalist, and do not specialize. Maintain flexibility in your career early-on, and learn all aspects of the industry. Keys to my success have always been "concentrate, trust common sense, and seize opportunities."
How do you manage the work/life balance?
Work/life balance in my case requires getting subscriptions to theater, music and opera to force me out of the office.
Where would you like to be 10 years from today?
Ten years from today I'd like to have more time for world travel with my husband!
