Baer of Hudson Square Connection hits the ground running

Name: Ellen Baer Title: President Company/firm: Hudson Square Connection Years with company/firm : Three Years Years in field: 26 Years in real estate industry: 26 Address: 180 Varick Street, Suite 422, New York, NY 10014 Telephone: 212-463-9160 x223 Email: [email protected] URL: www.hudsonsquare.com Real estate organizations/affiliations: WX, REBNY and ULI During the last 10 years of your career, which professional accomplishment, honor or achievement was most meaningful to you and why? Starting the Hudson Square Connection BID. I was selected for my position from a pool of over 350 people because of my experience and reputation for getting things done in government and in the real estate industry-plus my desire to hit the ground running. Having worked in both the public and private sectors, my role as president is the culmination of the last 20 years of my career. Which project, deal or transaction was the 'game changer' in the advancement of your career during the last 10 years? Since the Connection's founding in 2009, we've really put Hudson Square on the map. Before the BID, only a small group of commercial real estate brokers knew the neighborhood-now, we have a 2% vacancy rate, a public profile and a real identity as the home of the innovation economy. How do you contribute to your company and / or the industry? I am a former Board member and Program Committee head for WX New York Women Executives in Real Estate (still active as a mentor) What advice would you give to women just starting out in commercial real estate? Be true to yourself and don't be afraid to stand up for what you believe. It's entirely possible you'll look at things differently from the 20 men who are in the room - if you know you have something to say, SAY IT. And don't be afraid to ask for more money for yourself. How do you manage the work/life balance? I let everyone think/know they're the most important person in the world. Who or what has been the strongest influence on your career and why? The short-lived, but well loved feminist movement of the 1970's made me blissfully ignorant of the fact that men don't like listening to women about numbers and made me truly, truly believe (in my deepest soul) that I could have it all. How are you using social media to promote yourself, your products and / or your firm? Hudson Square social media is the voice of our organization; a resource for constituents and real estate followers. We use the medium to constantly engage with local businesses and promote the evolving neighborhood. Where would you like to be 10 years from today? I'd like to be presiding over a Hudson Square that has a beautiful streetscape and amenities, has a co-gen plant, green rooftops (preferably with urban farms) and is still the hippest place in the City.
