2026 Developing Queens: J.H.S. 216Q

Queens, NY Technico Construction Services Inc. is supporting the NYC School Construction Authority in the addition and modernization of J.H.S. 216Q. The project expands capacity, upgrades building systems, and delivers a resilient, high-performance learning environment aligned with the current SCA and NYC Green Schools standards

The scope includes a new three-story addition totaling approximately 52,000 s/f (17,300 s/f per floor). Designed for grades 6 through 8, the expansion supports a projected enrollment of 473 students while improving program space and operational efficiency. The addition is integrated with the existing structure to maintain continuity and minimize disruption to ongoing school operations.

The structural system consists of micropile foundations and a reinforced concrete frame, selected to address site conditions and ensure long-term durability. The building envelope incorporates architectural precast wall panels and high-performance aluminum windows, providing a modern, durable façade with improved thermal performance. The roofing system features a fluid-applied protected membrane assembly with a green roof, supporting stormwater management and sustainability objectives.

Interior program includes classrooms, science labs, conference rooms, administrative offices, and shared support areas. Finishes meet SCA standards, emphasizing durability, acoustical control, and maintainability. Key elements include resilient flooring, acoustic ceiling systems, custom casework, and impact-resistant wall treatments designed for high-traffic educational environments.

Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems have been comprehensively upgraded. The HVAC system utilizes Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heat pumps and high-efficiency rooftop units to provide flexible, energy-efficient climate control. Acoustically lined ductwork and sound attenuation measures support a quiet learning environment. Dedicated exhaust systems serve restrooms and telecommunications rooms. Plumbing systems include heat pump water heaters, high-efficiency fixtures, and advanced filtration. Fire protection is provided via a standpipe and sprinkler system with booster pumps.

The project incorporates a full suite of low-voltage and technology systems to support modern educational needs. These include IP-based intercom and sound systems, intrusion detection, interactive classroom technology, and a digital video surveillance system (IPDVS). Infrastructure is supported by structured cabling and fiber optic backbone, with additional systems including fire alarm, public address, clock, telephone, and data networks.

Renovation work within the existing facility includes selective demolition and reconfiguration to align with the new addition. Scope includes removal of portions of exterior masonry walls, interior partitions, finishes, and building systems in targeted areas such as classrooms, locker rooms, and restrooms. A notable structural modification involves the removal of an existing column spanning the first through third floors along the west elevation to accommodate the new layout. Additional upgrades include window replacement at the west courtyard, new corridor extensions with fire-rated assemblies, and roof penetrations for new mechanical equipment.

Construction is being executed in multiple phases to maintain full school operations. Temporary facilities and coordinated logistics ensure continuity of instruction while maintaining safety for students and staff. Phasing strategies have been critical in managing site constraints and minimizing disruption in an active school environment.

The project is designed in accordance with the NYC Green Schools Guide and targets LEED Silver equivalency. Sustainable features include energy-efficient HVAC systems, improved indoor environmental quality, and a green roof system. These strategies contribute to reduced energy consumption and enhanced occupant comfort.

The J.H.S. 216Q addition and modernization reflects a focused approach to delivering durable, efficient, and future-ready educational infrastructure. Through coordinated design and construction, the project enhances capacity while upgrading core building systems to meet current performance and sustainability standards.
