Cooper Union to offer LEED prep course and to expand green building design certificate program
Building on its success offering a certificate in Green Building Design, the Continuing Education Department of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art will introduce a preparatory course for the LEED New Construction Exam.
The coursework in Cooper Union's prep program for the LEED New Construction Exam includes detailed discussion of the new LEED credit categories. Study topics include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design credits and the LEED certification process. LEED exams for existing buildings, commercial interiors, core and shell, homes and neighborhood development will be discussed. The 10-session study course fee is $590 and will be taught by John Maddocks, Ph.D., AIA, LEED AP on Tuesday evenings, from Feb. 17 - April 21.
Students will be required to buy the 2009 LEED manual. For enrollment information or information about other continuing education courses offered by The Cooper Union, including professional development courses for architects and engineers, visit www.cooper.edu/ce or call (212) 353-4195 for a catalog.
David Greenstein, director of continuing education for The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, said, "Building green is a critical part of this country's new paradigm for design. If practicing architects, engineers and developers want to remain competitive in New York and beyond, becoming LEED certified is a career must. Cooper Union's programs, our Certificate in Green Building Design and the new LEED prep course -- teach them what they need to know about sustainable design and construction."
Students may take individual courses or, by accumulating 110 hours of coursework within two years, qualify for a Certificate in Green Building Design from Cooper Union's Department of Continuing Education. The Continuing Education Department also offers professional development courses for engineers, architects, developers, designers, and members of allied professions. These courses, taught by leading practitioners in their fields, sharpen professional skills or add new ones. Most of the courses also meet state license-renewal requirements.
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is a distinguished private college of art, architecture and engineering founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, an inventor, industrialist and philanthropist. Since its founding, all admitted students have received full-tuition scholarships.
