Company of the Month: Gettry Marcus at 30 years–Expanding its NYC presence with strategic planning and rebranding

New York, NY Just three short years ago following a strategic planning process led by their managing partner, Steven Marcus and other forward thinking partners, Gettry Marcus CPA, P.C. rebranded the firm from the inside out. This was done in conjunction with the firm moving to its new Woodbury, Long Island headquarters which consisted of modern, collaborative, state-of-the-art office space. During this period of transformation, the firm adapted a mission statement which they display prominently at each of their offices:

“We are a premier accounting, tax and consulting firm that builds value for our clients, employees and our community.

We have built a powerful brand centered around our three pillars: accounting, tax and consulting services.

Our mission is to ‘live the brand’ by always looking deeper.

Our vision is to have a firm of the future, today operating in an interactive collaborative environment.

Our challenge is to build an organization consisting of:

• Best Employees

• Best Clients

• Best Workplace

• Best Eventplace

• Best Careerplace”

More than a workspace

Gettry Marcus’ rebranding coincided with the firm’s organic growth and expansion in the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group which has now become the largest practice group in the firm. Led by partner-in-charge Steven Oppenheim and the firm’s team of experienced professionals, the group specializes in providing a variety of accounting, tax and consulting services to real estate and investment companies. Many of the firm’s real estate clients have been with the firm in excess of 25 years. These clients include residential and commercial owners, operators, developers, investors, real estate management companies, private equity and real estate funds and other real estate-related parties. Their client’s properties include residential multi-family, commercial, industrial, retail shopping centers, cooperatives, and condominiums.

The Real Estate Group is committed to helping its clients meet their business and cash flow objectives while advising on sophisticated tax strategies. This includes analysis of significant transactions which include 1031 exchanges and cost segregation studies. In addition, they are experts in tangible property regulations, which have provided tremendous tax savings for clients, and allowed the firm to develop new clients who were not taking advantage of the new regulations’ benefits.

One of Gettry Marcus’ major goals in 2016 was to expand their presence in New York City. The firm has had an office in the city since its’ inception in 1987. As of January 1, 2016, the firm had two locations in New York City. The plan was to combine the offices and secure one new location in the heart of Manhattan which could provide the firm with:

• The size to accommodate the firms projected growth;

Collaborative environment

• A state-of-the-art facility where Gettry Marcus could stay true to its brand; and

• The ability to serve as an event space for networking and community events.

It was important for the space to be one which would be large enough to accommodate the firms’ growth path and further solidify Gettry Marcus as a top-tier regional firm. The firm is consistently listed as a top 200 accounting firm based on firm size by Inside Public Accounting (IPA). In late 2016, the firm was chosen as an IPA “Best of the Best” firm. This honor is bestowed on 50 firms nationally and recognizes firms that are not only profitable, but strong organizationally.

In mid-2016, the firm inked a deal at 1407 Broadway taking the entire 40th floor. The building was under major renovation, but with one foot inside, and a healthy dose of imagination, the firm knew they could build out the space like their headquarters, which would allow them to replicate their brand in the heart of the city. Originally built in 1950, the newly renovated 1407 Broadway is becoming a hub of technology and creativity and is a dynamic, collaborative office destination for market-leading firms. The space would be the ideal setting to propel Gettry Marcus to the next level.

In January 2017, Gettry Marcus celebrated their 30th year anniversary with the move to 1407 Broadway. In their 30 years the firm has grown to over 100 employees, and they expect that number to continue to grow by leaps and bounds in the near future. With that growth in mind, the firm hired their first director of recruiting & career development who will focus on Gettry Marcus’ recruiting efforts, employee retention and the firm’s internship and careerpath programs.

Gettry Marcus instituted a Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative in 2014, with the firm concentrating their efforts on supporting the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings world-wide. This mission is accomplished through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free of charge. The benefits of this initiative include comradery among employees which fosters a positive workplace environment. Employees like working for a company that has a good public image and gives back to the community in which they work and live. When employees are passionate about making a difference in the lives of people the company touches, everyone succeeds.

Gettry Marcus CPA, P.C. is a top 200 firm nationally with offices in Woodbury, Long Island and New York City. They provide accounting, tax, and consulting services to commercial businesses, high net-worth individuals and various industries which include real estate and health care. The firm has one of the premier and most credentialed Business Valuation and Litigation Groups in the New York Area.

Their experience in diverse industries and a highly talented and experienced professional staff gives Gettry Marcus the ability to share valuable insights into their clients’ businesses, to better understand their goals and problems and to help them attain the vision they have for their company.

Gettry Marcus is “always looking deeper” to build value for their clients.

The death of the generic offering memorandum: What buyers expect in 2025 - by Kimberly Zar Bloorian

There was a time when an offering memorandum (OM) was pretty bare bones, some photos, a few bullet points on income, and a rent roll thrown in at the back. That used to get the job done. Not anymore. In 2025, buyers are sharper, faster, and more selective. They’re looking

Tri-state capital migrates nationally amid regulation pressure - by Reese Weaver

New York tri-state multifamily investors are increasingly reallocating capital to less-regulated markets across the U.S. as rent control and legislative risk erode returns at home. With over 60% of New York City’s rental housing stock classified as rent-stabilized, the traditional value-add model — buying under-performing buildings,
