Mark McDonough
Vice President of Construction
NYCAN Builders

“Mark is a respected leader in commercial construction. He consistently drives results through strategic vision, integrity, and collaboration. His commitment to excellence, mentorship, and our clients has strengthened both our firm and the broader industry, setting a high standard for leadership and impact.”

What is one major challenge you’ve overcome as a leader, and what did it teach you?

One major challenge I faced as a leader recently was guiding a team through a project that was losing momentum. Morale was low, communication had broken down, and trust needed rebuilding. I focused on listening first — understanding concerns, clarifying goals, and resetting expectations. By encouraging open dialogue and delegating responsibilities, the team regained confidence and ownership. This experience taught me that leadership isn’t about control, but about clarity, empathy, and empowering others to succeed together.

How do you inspire, motivate, or mentor others within your organization?

I inspire and mentor others by listening to the foundation of every interaction. I take time to understand each person’s goals, challenges, and ideas without interruption or judgment. This helps build trust and shows that their voice truly matters. By reflecting back what I hear and offering thoughtful guidance, I help individuals feel valued and supported. Listening also allows me to tailor motivation to each person, empowering them to grow with confidence and contribute more meaningfully to the organization.
