Years in real estate:

I spent the last 17 years working as a site engineer involving the development or redevelopment of sites. Recently, I’ve been involved in larger scale developments and their related issues on LI. I have attended the NY Int. Conf of Shopping Centers & take a great interest in understanding the trending RE markets as retailers move to LI. LI is a unique landscape for RE. Many national retailers will often choose to develop in NY last. The combined cost for RE and its entitlement process, along with the related time-frames needed for completion, inhibit developers. There is a more local niche her on LI and acceptance of the process.

How did you get your start in real estate?

Working for an engineering firm with a client base that included national restaurant, supermarket retailers, banks, Understand RE trends, location, constraints, restrictions, has become what I do.

Interest in seeing tired sites be renovated and repurposed. Seeing vacant sites developed and used for the needs of the community.

What real estate associations or organizations are you a member of?

Long Island Business Institute; Long Island Real Estate Group; Women Economic Developers of Long Island – Secretary, Vice President & President Elect

What recent project or transaction are you most proud of?

There is a current project I am working on now that I’m very happy and proud to be a part of. My client and her sister will be opening their first Dairy Queen restaurant franchise. It’s been their dream to open a family restaurant and the entire process has been very rewarding for me to be involved with a Client so committed and interested in their project. To be a part of their dream and to help facilitate it into reality has been rewarding.

Who or what has been the strongest influence on your career and why?

My Friends from WEDLI …the women I’ve met at WEDLI are all strong, independent, and successful. They support my efforts and inspire me to succeed and inspire others. Several colleagues of mine have also encouraged me and supported me in the growth of my new firm. A few opportunities opened the door to many successful clients. But perhaps the strongest influence has been my husband who supports me in life and believes in me as a professional, even when I feel like giving up on myself.

What time management strategies do you find to be the most effective for you?

I try to get into the office at least 1 hour early every day. This allows me time to review plans and organize my day without the common distractions and interruptions of the day. Because once the day officially begins, the phones start ringing, my staff quickly gets to work on their projects and your day is not yours again until well after 5pm. The additional productivity gained by just that one extra hour in the morning is invaluable to my work and well worth the personal sacrifice. And if I know I have something that has to be completed that day, I get in extra early to get an added head start.

When you launched your business what were some challenges that you experienced?

I started my own business shortly after I left a large firm that involved a 2 year non-compete agreement. This forced me to get out and network for new contacts, meet new colleagues and connect with potential clients free from ties to my former firm. I joined various networking groups and met a wonderful group of professionals that I still work with today. Over time, I’ve grown an entirely new client-base that continues to expand, a business that has shown similar growth and made a brand of professional excellence for myself and my company in the process. It’s both rewarding and validating to know that my success has been a result of my own efforts and talent, free from any ties or associations from my beginnings at the large firm.

In addition, the year was 2010. The economy was still down and development was slow. Being successful at a time when development was not is another challenge that we overcame.
