New York, NY More than 120 Steamfitters Local 638 members employed by WDF Inc. are paving the way for NYU Langone Medical Center’s state-of-the art, 830,000 s/f Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion set to open in 2018.
Steamfitters at the project are installing fire sprinklers, energy-efficient HVAC systems, an air vacuum system to transport samples and biopsies between different floors and facilities, as well as steam piping for sterilizing equipment, lab instruments and patient rooms.

Design and construction details even include a modern and highly efficient air vacuum transport system to enable hospital labs transport medical samples and biopsies between different floors and facilities, with record speed and efficiency,” said Steamfitters Local 638 business agent at large Robert Bartels, Jr. “We are proud to invest our skilled workforce in a project that will enable medical professionals to provide patients with top-tier bedside care and accommodations, and ultimately save lives.”
The hardhats are using high-quality, specialized construction techniques to accommodate the facility’s emerging technologies, innovative clinical practices and growing emphasis on the patient experience, as envisioned by the NYU Langone’s senior clinical and administrative leadership.
“We recognize that hospitals should be constructed with the highest standards and in accordance with local laws, which ensure public safety, because a short-cut can make a life-or-death difference,” said Max Sheeran, a Steamfitters Local 638 business agent overseeing the project. “That’s why each of our workers completes a five-year apprentice program to master their trade and cultivate the skills needed to stay ahead of emerging construction trends.”
The Kimmel Pavilion will adjoin the current flagship Tisch Hospital, which is being refurbished. Together, the facilities will offer single-bed inpatient rooms designed to enhance infection control, improve workflow for staff and better accommodate patients, their family and visitors.
According to NYU, the buildings directly connect on the lobby level concourse, procedural and imaging floors to create a seamless patient experience and optimize efficiency by moving patients around less and enabling staff to spend more time caring for patients.
The facilities will also share central sterilization and support services.
In total, the project has created more than 650 jobs for construction workers, including over 250 steamfitters employed throughout the project.
