Sides joins Sam Schwartz Engineering as PM/senior transportation engineer

Ken Sides, PE, PTOE has joined Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE) as a project manager and senior transportation engineer in the civil design group of its Tampa office. Sides is a nationally recognized engineer of modern roundabouts in the U.S. He was project manager for some 25 constructed roundabouts for the city of Clearwater, Fla. His roundabout expertise is uncommon. The few existing roundabout engineers in the U.S. are typically instrumental in only a handful of roundabout projects. "Ken's rare experience in the promotion, engineering and project management of modern roundabouts will diversify SSE's capabilities not just in Florida but the whole country," said Jeff Trim, PE, PTOE, executive vice president for transportation services. "Ken's long track record of working through the entire roundabout process has partnered with all stakeholders and led to many successes." At SSE, Sides will lead the roundabout practice area and contribute to the growing active transportation practice area. Sides contributed to the books Street Design Guidelines for Healthy Neighborhoods, published by the Local Government Coalition in 1999, and Enhancing Intersection Safety through Roundabouts, published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers in 2008, and authored numerous articles on roundabouts in engineering and planning magazines. His projects have won numerous awards, among them First Place, Future of the Region for the Clearwater Beach Entryway Roundabout from the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and Distinguished Local Project for the Skycrest Roundabout Corridor from the American Planning Association, Suncoast Chapter. Sides holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of South Florida. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida and a certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer. Ken has more than 25 years of engineering experience and most recently worked 16 years for the city of Clearwater. He managed numerous roundabout, trail, stormwater and traffic calming projects for the city.
