Which professional associations or organizations would you recommend to women who are starting out in the AEC industry? There are so many great organizations out there supporting women right now. I would highly recommend NEW|Nontraditional Employment for Women and the CoreNet NYC|Women’s Leadership Committee.
What was a pivotal point in your career? After my corporate position was outsourced, I leveraged my professional experiences from the financial and fashion industries to start my own design firm in 2006. I transitioned from residential to commercial interiors after the economic downturn of 2008.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Over the past year, I have been able to help grow the firm’s construction practice significantly, working with my partners on several large construction litigation matters
How can AEC companies recruit more women? Organizations that champion the education of young women provide valuable opportunities for companies to contribute and volunteer. One such organization that Bohler highly recommends is Girls Inc.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? In the past year, my responsibilities have shifted from directly building projects to building teams. Using my experience of managing teams as an architect and overall building experience, I am helping develop others as construction managers.
Which professional associations or organizations would you recommend to women who are starting out in the AEC industry? I highly recommend joining your local Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) chapter. For six years now, I have been a proud member of CREWNY, and currently, as the Communications Chair, I serve on the Board of Directors.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Starting my career at Spector! I’ve grown immensely within the company as an interior designer and have had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, including assisting top financial firms
What was a pivotal point in your career? My most pivotal point work-wise was launching Eastman Cooke & Associates in 2009 with business partner Peter Morandi! At the time, I was a special education teacher working with students on the autism spectrum.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? In the past year, I have been most proud of watching my current team come together and the learning curve that happened with our project. We are currently working on occupational therapy housing units at Bellevue Hospital,
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? The accomplishment I am most proud of is obtaining my Enrolled Agent (EA) license, the highest credential issued by the IRS. I challenged myself to pass the exam and obtain the certification before the busy tax season began, and I reached that goal.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Last year I completed construction of a pharmaceutical manufacturing clean room space, and within three months of turnover, the client was going for lab certification to start production.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Amongst the completion of many successful projects, what I am most proud of is the growth and strength of our team. As we grow, our team continues to uphold the values of our company and elevate the standards of our work.
What is your favorite building in New York? I don’t know that I could pick just one. I have quite a few, for different reasons but I will say that my favorite ‘skyline’ view is always flying past the city at night. All of the buildings lit up and twinkling still gives me goose bumps to this day.
What was a pivotal point in your career? Obtaining architecture licensure was a pivotal moment in my career. Registration was the culmination of hours and hours of hard work, spent between education, exams and experience. It brings confidence to myself and my peers, and brings value
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work on a variety of projects with talented engineers. Each of these projects has challenged my engineering knowledge and molded my leadership skills.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of the completion of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) Koch Ambulatory operating room project. Like most of the jobs we work on, this project was complex, and the project team overcame challenges related to material and equipment delays.
What was a pivotal point in your career? In 2012, after Hurricane Sandy devastated NYC, I was assigned to the city’s rebuilding efforts at the mayor’s Housing Recovery Office. I had never worked in housing recovery, let alone been involved with disaster response at this level.
In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? The project I am most proud of is an interior build-out we completed at 885 3rd Ave., also known as the Lipstick Building. Being a women-owned general contracting business and working in this iconic New York building felt very on brand!
