How do you contribute to your community or your profession?
A lack of hands-on teaching opportunities in historic preservation trades and craftmanship causes many of them to be lost over time. This thought remained with me as I began my career and in 2020, I had the privilege of becoming the co-founder of ReStructure Heritage, a non-profit organization based in Spain. At ReStructure, we work with municipalities to identify neglected heritage sites and create workshops that engage citizens and students in their restoration while providing them with hands-on training in historic preservation trades. While enriching the next generation of craftspeople in the historic preservation field, our workshops give neglected heritage an opportunity to enhance its splendor and continue to tell a story through time for future generations to enjoy.
What led you to your current profession?
I always had an interest in art and history which was nurtured by many travels with my family when I was young. Having the opportunity to visit different architectural sites and monuments sparked an interest in civil engineering. As I started to study, it became more apparent that my interest was more focused on the architectural aspects of the buildings rather than just the structure. I wanted a career where I could combine art, history, and engineering. This led me to decide that historic preservation was the right path for me. My professional career has now led me to be part of a team dedicated to the architectural arts, working towards salvaging historic buildings and their unique architectural features.
