NYSCAR Western New York Chapter hosts update on Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus

NYS Commercial Association of Realtors (NYSCAR) Western New York Chapter hosted guest speaker Matthew Enstice, executive director of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus on Thursday, May 15th. Enstice presented an update on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) and briefed the local commercial real estate brokerage community about strategic goals and objectives of the BNMC. With much development underway on the BNMC and much more to come, NYSCAR officials seek to create a relationship that will both support the needs of the BNMC and leverage community-wide marketing efforts to attract research and manufacturing innovators to the region. BNMC is dedicated to the cultivation of a world-class medical campus for clinical care, research, education, and entrepreneurship on 120 acres in the downtown area. It is home to the region's top clinical, research, and medical education institutions, including: University at Buffalo, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Kaleida Health, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Buffalo Medical Group, Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired, Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, and Upstate New York Transplant Services. More than 8,500 people work on the BNMC. Together, the BNMC institutions host over one million patient visits annually and account for approximately $1.5 billion in economic impact each year. The BNMC consists of more than 4.5 million s/f of research, clinical, and support space. The BNMC is currently renovating a former windshield wiper-factory to create new laboratory and office space for life sciences and biotech companies seeking to be a part of the thriving BNMC. Dubbed the "Innovation Center," this renovation project has already garnered interest from companies based in other parts of the country and internationally, showing the importance of this emerging industry and in particular the significance of this urban medical campus, which is considered the "address" for the region's life sciences initiative. The Innovation Center consists of newly renovated office, wet lab, and flexible lab space with shared conference rooms and support services, on-site management support, dedicated parking, operational 24x7 building access, and accessible shipping docks. The flexible floor plans can be customized to individual needs. It is estimated that within the next two to three years, 750,000 s/f of development will be underway on the BNMC for a total of $300 million, adding more than 3,000 employees and a half million more annual patient visits.
