Munfah joins WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff as senior vice president and director of global tunneling

New York, NY Nasri Munfah has been appointed a senior vice president and director of global tunneling at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Munfah will be responsible for developing a long-term strategic plan to advance the firm’s tunneling practice nationally and globally. He will provide leadership in project delivery, marketing, recruitment and professional development of staff, acquisitions, and teaming opportunities with other firms. He has 30 years of experience in tunneling and underground engineering and project management experience in transportation, transit and underground engineering. He has been responsible for managing all phases of multi-billion-dollar, multidisciplinary domestic and international tunneling and transportation projects from feasibility and conceptual engineering through final design and construction. He is a principal investigator and a co-author of Federal Highway Administration Tunnel Design Manual.

Munfah rejoins WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff from an international engineering firm, where he served as chairman of the global tunnel business practice. From 1970 through 2004, he was a vice president, senior technical manager and senior engineering manager with Parsons Brinckerhoff, serving as project manager, project director and principal-in-charge on tunneling projects worldwide. 

Mr. Munfah received an M.S. degree in structures from Michigan State University and a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Aleppo in Syria. He serves as an adjunct professor in Columbia University’s civil engineering department, teaching graduate courses on the design and construction of tunnels and underground structures. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Civil Engineers, The Moles, the Transportation Research Board, and the ITA.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has a long history of tunnel engineering, dating to the 1890s and the design of the original New York subway system. Current and recent tunneling projects include the Eurasia Tunnel and the Marmaray Tunnel in Istanbul, Turkey; the No. 7 Subway Line Extension, Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access projects in New York City; the Regional Connector and Purple Line Extension in Los Angeles; the Central Subway in San Francisco; the Second Midtown Tunnel in Norfolk, Virginia; and the PortMiami Tunnel.WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff was named “Engineer of the Year” by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) in 2015.
