Horst Design International designs new Wyndam Garden Hotel

Brooklyn, NY Horst Design International (HDI) worked with the Wyndham Garden Hotel – Bay Ridge ownership team of Daniel and Ben Chen, and the Wyndham Organization to create a contemporary lodging oasis.

Recent years have seen many new boutique hotels pop-up throughout the borough. But the ambiance and amenities in most of these establishments is lacking the qualities that seasoned travelers are seeking. Dan Chen made the design program clear from the beginning that he wanted “a contemporary boutique hotel that is more stylish and inviting than all other local hotels in Brooklyn and that would properly reflect the high quality design to match their other properties.”

The resulting facility is a 72-room modern hotel that provides the guests with a chic atmosphere that compliments its NY roots. The organization anticipates a wide array of guest profiles to be visiting (foreign vacation travelers, business travelers, family travel, etc.) Therefore the design had to complement each of these categories and cater to their various needs.

Each room in the hotel is equipped with all the amenities any traveler could ask for, and some boast views of the skyline. Although the space constraints typical to any NY establishment provide certain design challenges, the design team was able to overcome these issues and provide comfort at every level. Each room is fully equipped with: a frost glass enclosed marble bathroom (keeping it light and open feeling), handsome plumbing fixtures, all custom-made furnishings, storage space, fine linens, on-line hook-ups, lighting design, etc.  Ben Chen was successful in sourcing and manufacturing nearly all the HDI specified interior finishes from luxury overseas vendors.

Each floor of the hotel is designed around a seasonal theme ( ex: winter, spring, summer and autumn), with full height wall murals throughout the building at each of the hallways and in each guest room.  The complimenting color scheme on each floor was carefully adjusted to balance with the seasonal murals.  Including the specialized carpeting planks that run throughout each of the seven levels (shags, cut & loop piles, and sculpted carpeting.) For a sense of richness and for durability, the Hall walls are lined with slabs of wall tile and stone (a balance of rough-cut and polished surfaces to play with the reflection of light.)

The hotel exterior façade was designed to make a bold contemporary statement and stand-out from the neighboring façades/streetscape.  Seven ft. diameter tinted glass windows pierce the metal clad fenestration from ground level to the top seventh floor. Doug Horst, creative director of HDI, said, “An orchestrated combination of glass and chameleon color changing metal cladding sets the expectations for the modern luxury experience that we developed within.”  The façade is also dramatically lit at night with concealed LED lighting encapsulating each of the round window penetrations.

In the words of a local hotel critic, this property boasts the “Brooklyn Experience and Excitement at its BEST.”
