Chiefs at PWC event launch organization's 30th anniversary

In December 2009 Professional Women in Construction hosted 'Hail to the Chiefs' at the Yale Club in NYC, a festive event that celebrated the season, applauded industry leaders, and launched the organization's 30th anniversary with a bang. Noting that there are emerging signs of rigor from the public and private sectors, PWC President Lenore Janis introduced the evening's honorees and presenters as "a star-studded cast" of "extraordinary women" and the men who support them. Christine Flaherty, senior associate, STV, introduced John Scorcia, acting regional administrator, USGSA. Scorcia said that the "Northeast Caribbean region manages robust construction projects" and that this is "an exciting time for the GSA." Lina Gottesman, president of Altus Metal & Marble introduced Gina Pollara, executive director of FDR Four Freedoms Park saying that her "enthusiasm knows no bounds." Pollara said "We need to reaffirm our commitment to the four freedoms." Noting that "PWC heralds your achievement," Kay Lee, general sales manager, SimplexGrinnell, introduced David Tweedy, chief of capital projects, PANYNJ. Tweedy praised several women at the PANYNJ saying, "These women are changing our world and creating possibilities for our daughters." Barbara Armand, president, Armand Corporation, presented Richard Sarles, executive director of NJ Transit, who noted the progress made by women and that "half of our executive management is now women." Nancy Czesak, first vice president, Tishman Construction Corp., praised honoree Jay Badame, president and COO, Tishman Construction Corporation who said "We must support women at the corporate and managerial levels." Honoree Ruth Hassell-Thompson, senator, NYS 36th district, pledged that even though the role of women and minorities in construction will always fall short, she will continue to be an outspoken voice for their goals. Guests praised the event: "The cross section of participants facilitates a blending of perspectives and opinions that helps us keep abreast...and offers insights into current trends across the industry," said Joseph Cadillac, WTC Construction, The Louis Berger Group, Inc. "The format of the event facilitated active and open dialog and allowed everyone to expand on their personal and professional networks," said Denis Boylan, Gilbane. Phil Cacossa, Design Resources Group Architects, was glad for the chance to speak one-on-one with "several industry leaders we normally would not have access to." "I was fascinated by the breadth of industry professionals present," said Heather Fraser, JCJ Architecture. Flora Ramos, Tishman Construction Corporation of NY, said, "PWC has been the foundation allowing many women within the industry to grow and prosper." "The event provided excellent B-to-B opportunities..." said Lincoln Simmons, Warren Panzer Engineers, P.C.
