ACEC New York firms participate in ACE Mentor Program

The current trend in American education is a higher focus on STEM subjects, and there is overall concern in the A/E/C industry regarding a workforce reaching retirement age and a lack of young professionals to take on their roles. To that end, the ACEC New York Scholarship Fund is proud to provide financial assistance for current university students pursuing degrees in engineering or surveying. In addition to our scholarship fund, each year since 2011, ACEC New York has provided a high school graduate of the ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York with a $3,000 legacy scholarship to be used towards pursuing a degree in engineering. The 2011 recipient, Mohammad Zaryab, proceeded to study electrical engineering through the Macaulay Honors College at the City College of New York. The 2012 recipient, Emily Farella, is studying mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Samantha Magnes received the scholarship in 2013 and is studying civil engineering at the University of Virginia. Last year, Kemba Hall earned the scholarship and is now studying engineering at the University of Delaware. ACE Mentor is a not-for-profit organization that helps prepare high school students for careers in design and construction through mentoring by industry professionals. The program was founded in New York City in 1995 by leading architects, contractors, engineers and owners. It has grown to more than 8,000 students and 2,500 mentors in 200 cities and 40 states. Since its inception, the program has served over 5,000 students in New York and 65,000 students nationwide. In 2013, over 950 students registered for the program in New York alone. ACE Mentor of Greater New York has awarded $1.887 million in scholarships to 915 program graduates. "These students are the future of the engineering profession, and it's up to us to nurture and encourage them now," said Milo Riverso Ph.D., P.E., CCM, current chairman of ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York, as well as president and CEO of STV Group, Inc. and member of the ACEC New York board of directors. "These are bright, motivated young men and women, and we are proud to encourage them on their path to a great career."
