2026 Women in Construction: Grace Lawal, RKTB Architects

Grace Lawal
Project Manager
RKTB Architects

What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community?

I am currently working on a moderate rehabilitation project of over 1,000 units at a NYCHA housing development in Brooklyn. The large impact the project will have on the community is why I am very excited about it. Some of the residents I’ve spoken with have been living in their homes for decades. They express pride in their homes and the importance of upgrades that will support them as they grow older. Our designs are creating spaces that will assist this aging population in living independently and comfortably.

What emerging challenge or opportunity do you see shaping the construction industry in the next few years, and how are you preparing for it?

The integration of technology, such as AI and BIM, present an emerging opportunity for shaping the construction industry. To be sure I’m ready for it I am diversifying my knowledge and educating myself on the latest advancements. One program with a lot of potential is Autodesk’s generative design tools, which can automate tasks and enhance designs in relation to performance outcomes. I am looking forward to seeing how this will shape the future of design and construction.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry?

Find a group of like-minded women in the industry, and hold them close. Having a support system that is both social and professional is extremely important. I have had my circle of friends for a decade now, and they have been a constant and valuable source of help and encouragement when I needed it most.

What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today?

More women need to know that there are plenty of opportunities for advancing in the AEC industry. There are some that are tailored to women, like the WX Scholars Program and funding opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses (MWBE). Regardless of your gender, any opportunity is available to you when you put in effort, apply your strengths, and -- perhaps the most important part -- get to know people in the industry.

What habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated during a busy week?

Every day I remind myself of the plans that God has for me and I reflect on how much progress I’ve made, however small.

What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity?

I do a lot of creative writing: music, poetry, short stories, and film. Connecting to my imagination helps me find balance.

Share one fun or unexpected detail about yourself that colleagues might not know.

I ran track and field for a decade and considered pursuing it professionally. My events were the 100m, 200m, and 400m.
