2026 Women in Construction: Amy Starr, MDS Architecture

What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community? One project I’m most excited about is renovating the art classroom at a local high school on Long Island. The teacher of 26 years became emotional discussing a long-overdue transformation. We’re introducing cohesive storage, removing the drop ceiling to expose the deck and restore three hidden skylights, and adding a storefront-style hallway display for student fashion work. It will bring light, pride, and inspiration to the entire school community.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? One piece of advice for women starting in construction: no question is silly. School teaches creativity, but real learning happens on the job. Construction is full of technical details you can’t fully know without experience. If you don’t understand something in a meeting, ask. Each question builds your knowledge and confidence. Growth happens when you engage, speak up, and learn — and eventually, you’ll be the one answering questions for others.

What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity? My family, especially my two babies, brings me joy. Dancing in our living room to Rio’s opening number lifts my spirits.
