Holbrook, NY The Shops at SunVet tell an exciting story of what can happen when ingenuity and sustainable practices work in tandem. A once beloved mall is able to be reimagined for a fresh future. With the decrease in mall use over the past decade, it was SBLM’s job to create a design that was fresh and exciting. With the modern shopper in mind, an exciting new space was imagined. Fresh landscaping that encouraged walking, intuitive shopping layouts, and store fronts designed for food, commerce, and socializing. The new design was not just a shopping center, but a communal hub once more.
A new look for the Shops at SunVet required strategic demolition of parts of the original building. SBLM’s next challenge became turning all of the rubble into valuable materials for construction; reuse became the focus. More than 75% of the existing construction was able to be reused. This success spared the developers the energy and cost of harvesting, producing, shipping, and installing outside materials. This not only benefitted the local and statewide environment, but also saved the developers money. With SBLM’s commitment to this goal, dozens of forest acres, 30 metric tons of CO2, and more 4.3 million lbs of materials were preserved. A huge success for both the developer and contractor.
