What is one project or achievement in your career that you are most proud of, and how did it impact your organization or community?

As an NYC resident of 25 years, I am most proud of the historic preservation work I’ve been a part of. I’m still awed by the city’s architectural variety, but it’s been incredible to gain a deeper understanding of older construction methods and materials. Working on Hurricane Sandy recovery allowed me to visit and work with people in a variety of communities and neighborhoods in every borough. The experience bonded me further to the people of NYC and solidified my resolve to help create a sustainable future here for us all.

What trends or innovations do you believe will shape the future of your field, and how are you positioning yourself (or your firm) to be at the forefront?

Energy efficiency and improved building performance will be, and in some cases already is, driving new design and adaptive reuse projects. There is an understanding of what is now required to meet the NYCECC; the next step would be replacing some high-performing but non-“green” materials with equal or better performing sustainable products. Folding these into existing specifications would be incredibly impactful. I’d also encourage trusted manufacturers to develop more proven “green” products for use in specifications.

Do you have a hidden talent or a surprising fact about yourself that most people wouldn’t know?

I grew up in affordable artist housing in Seattle, in an elementary school designed by Paul Thiry.

Who or what has inspired you most in your career, and what advice would you share with the next generation of women entering the A/E/C industry?

I am motivated and inspired by the variety of infrastructure, construction, design, and environmental problems of modern life, and observing them from a design solution perspective. I don’t believe architecture solves all the world’s problems, but I do see how our built environment, and practices impact living beings. My respect for earth and its inhabitants drives me to use my creative, design, and problem solving skills to improve designs. To those entering the A/E/C industry I’d say, follow the questions the world presents you and align your responses with your vision of a better future.

What’s your favorite way to recharge or get inspired outside of work?

I love being in nature, and creating art and music.
