2023 Year in Review: Jason Karp,
Shawmut Design and Construction

Jason Karp
Director of Preconstruction
Shawmut Design and Construction

What was your greatest professional accomplishment or most notable project, deal, or transaction in 2023? At St. John’s University’s St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, I’m proud of how our team embraced tech during preconstruction. We 3D modeled the target LEED Silver building including geothermal wells to refine our construction approach. The building will serve students training to be nurses, which is essential to our city.

How has your career path changed in 2023? I’ve dedicated almost my entire career to field operations. However, I aspired to gain a broader perspective and make a bigger impact. That’s why, this year, I embraced the role of director of preconstruction. I now have the opportunity to preplan our most complex projects across the region.

What emerging trends will drive investment and development in 2024? In 2024, I see a focus on technology to make smarter decisions during preconstruction. We can now visualize what a jobsite will look like at any point in the schedule. Our clients are recognizing the value and are using the 3D renderings for key stakeholder communication and community outreach.
