In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Across all of its divisions, Hylan’s business continues to grow and I am extremely proud of my ability to rethink the way I do things to accommodate the growth. I am coming up on my 25-year anniversary with Hylan Datacom & Electrical division as Expeditor and one of the many things I have learned that stands out especially is that nothing really stays the same and you have to be open to changes all along the way.
How can AEC companies recruit more women? One way that the construction industry can recruit more women by circulating job ads that use inclusive verbiage for women to relate to as they consider themselves as a candidate for this type of career that is in a highly male dominated field.
What was a pivotal point in your career? A pivotal point in my career was when COVID hit. No longer able to physically go into the agencies to do my job as I had done, I realized then that I needed to rely on the strong connections I’d made over the years with the representatives of city agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and others. Even as the way of working changed drastically and Zoom was the most popular method to communicate, I adjusted quickly, never skipping a beat with the work I had to do.
What is your favorite building in New York? My favorite building in New York is the Freedom Tower. The Freedom Tower is a beautiful building standing 1,776 feet tall, a measurement that corresponds to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. For me, the Freedom Tower represents resilience, strength and the ability to move forward even after a terrible tragedy.
