2023 Women in Construction: Janice Narowski, Consigli Construction Co.

Janice Narowski
Project Superintendent
Consigli Construction Co.

In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? Last year I completed construction of a pharmaceutical manufacturing clean room space, and within three months of turnover, the client was going for lab certification to start production. It was a very complex fit-out with requirements developing during construction to keep up with cutting edge research. Knowing that all the hard work and long hours we put into meeting the deadline were appreciated and helped bring product to patients sooner was a great feeling.

What was a pivotal point in your career? When I switched into the role of superintendent. I had changed titles and roles in the past, but those had either been standard growth track or a transition to M/E/P manager after project experience led me that way. The jump to superintendent was the first time I asked to take on a new challenge and advocated for myself. It was pivotal both that I asked, and that the answer was instantly yes. The quick support gave me an increased level of confidence.

How can AEC companies recruit more women? Show the diversity of opportunities within the AEC industry. Some people hear construction and assume you need to work with tools in the field. There are so many other options that are involved in the process of designing, planning and building a project, and not all of them require a hammer or nails. Start introducing the industry’s options to colleges and high schools earlier so that young women and girls see what their futures could look like.
