2023 Ones to Watch Industry Leaders: Peter Madden, Westbeth Artists Housing

Peter Madden
Executive Director
Westbeth Artists Housing

Number of years in CURRENT position: 1

3 skills that you use every day in your position: Patience, creativity, problem solving.

Best book, podcast, or app for aspiring leaders: Every day I listen to the NYT The Daily podcast, and Stay Tuned with Preet, hosted by former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. I find it vital to stay tuned in to the news – both around the world and here in New York – in order to successfully navigate the city’s complex housing system that is inextricably linked to politics and policy.

Best advice for new leaders in 10 words or less: Never hesitate or be afraid to ask more questions.

What was one of your biggest challenges as a leader and how did you overcome it? Since joining Westbeth, I’ve seen firsthand how challenging it is to maintain a landmarked building complex, while also preserving its affordability. Buildings require capital repairs over time, but the care and precision required to preserve the architecturally significant elements of Westbeth that make it beautiful means additional resources and forward planning. Working together with our dedicated team we are able to safeguard the affordable housing that long served as a haven for New York creatives.

What makes this nominee an Industry Leader? “Throughout Peter’s 15 years in the housing industry, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to preserving affordable housing for all New Yorkers. As rents continue to rise and the need for affordable housing grows, Peter’s work to preserve affordable housing for artists is critical.” - Marc Jahr, Partner at Forsyth Street Advisors.
