What aspect of your position do you find most challenging?
As a leader, I find it most challenging to balance my projects’ everyday demands while ensuring my team knows that I am always available to them. My team must know they can come to me. Respect from a leader must be demonstrated to all (client, subcontractors, and project team). Success is not achieved without a team effort.
What advice would you give the next generation of leaders in your industry?
They do not need to know all the answers; if they need help, they should ask questions and seek answers to their concerns. Share their knowledge and mentor others. To be a successful leader, you must understand that many players are vital to success. Leading requires integrity by respecting others, communicating honestly, and leading by example.
What award were you most proud to receive?
My experience working on the NYBG’s Visitor’s Center project and the team I worked with was one that I was very proud to be a part of. This project was very complex with regard to construction, schedule, and safety. This experience expanded our safety culture and developed a relationship with a new client, which continues to this date.
Describe what you would consider to be ONE of your top career highlights:
In my 35+ years in the construction industry and my current position as vice president at EW Howell Construction Group, I have been involved in many spectacular general construction projects of various complexities. I enjoy being part of the process that brings plans and visions into reality for the betterment of our clients and communities.
