Nominee’s Company/Affiliation: Swinerton

Nominee’s City & State of Employment: New York City, NY

What is your management style?

To foster an exciting, cohesive, and team-oriented work environment in the home office and on our project sites where the team has a strong sense of accountability for themselves and towards their fellow employee-owners while having fun.

What was the most difficult experience you have encountered as a leader?

Adjusting to the challenges the COVID pandemic had on our staff and/or external partners and the empathy and understanding it required as a leader to maintain the business while being mindful of their personal wellness.

What advice would you give the next generation of leaders in your industry?

Judge slowly and make sure to have the full context of situations before reacting or acting. Quick reactions fueled by emotions rarely work well. You never know what others are dealing with, either personally or professionally, that may have impacted their decisions or behaviors. Lead with grace.

Describe what you would consider to be ONE of your top career highlights:

Opening the first office in Swinerton’s 130+ year history in New York City, nearly five years earlier than the company had originally planned, during the height of the COVID pandemic while others were scrambling to leave the city.
