Title: Counsel

Company Name: Harras Bloom & Archer, LLP

Years in real estate: 30+

How did you get your start in real estate?

When I graduated from law school, I had an uncle who was an attorney. He had an office on Broadway in Massapequa, and taught me how to do my first closing. He went through all the documents and figures with me in advance. He gave me confidence and taught me something not covered in law school.

What real estate associations or organizations are you a member of?

New York State Bar Association, Real Estate and Corporate Law Committees, Suffolk County Bar Association, Real Estate and Corporate Law Committees, Commack School to Business Partnership.

What recent project or transaction are you most proud of?

I recently represented a client in the purchase of a mixed-use building pursuant to an option to purchase set forth in his lease. The transaction took a full year, despite a tense and acrimonious relationship between the parties, but eventually closed. Each party saved tens of thousands in legal fees because we were able to resolve issues through negotiation as opposed to litigation. I suppose I take pride in this deal because it is typifies my philosophy and approach to practice. I strive to get the desired result in the most cost efficient, drama free manner possible.

What have been some of the benefits of being a mentor or having a mentor?

I have had the opportunity to mentor local high school students on numerous occasions. I generally try to schedule a client meeting, closing or other activity, so that they can see what typical day in my office is like. On one occasion, I took a few students to the home of an elderly, blind client for a contract signing. As I reviewed the various provisions with my client, a rather boring task, I noticed that the students were spellbound. The experience reminded me that it is an enormous gift and privilege to be in a profession which allows you to change people’s lives for the better. We should never take our roll for granted or forget the impact of our actions upon others.

What is the best advice you have received and who was it from?

Dress for the position you want, not the one you occupy. This gem was gleaned from a 1970’s book on dressing for success. It’s true, the dress makes the woman, especially, if you have matching pumps.
