11-06-2014 - BOMA/New York to hold Annual Conference and Leadership Breakfast

With news headlines revolving more and more around issues that affect commercial property management, BOMA/New York is focusing its upcoming Annual Conference and Leadership Breakfast exclusively on the two topics that have the most serious and costly consequences for the property management business: terrorism and weather-related damage. The conference, to be held at 101 Park Ave. from 8 to 10 a.m. on November 6th, will feature NYPD and Department of Buildings (DOB) officials, who will brief attendees on the NYPD's latest anti-terrorism initiatives and resources in light of heightened threat levels and New York City's pivotal role in international affairs, and conduct a "must-know" discussion and review of the latest changes to the NYC Construction Code—particularly the new local laws that reflect the dramatic impact of Superstorm Sandy and incorporate a range of lessons learned from that event. DOB officials will provide a status update of the changes in the Code, which is currently undergoing revision, as well as zero in on Local Law 141, which focuses heavily on flood-related issues that caused millions of dollars of damage in New York City. Key topics from that law, as well as LL13/2014 and LL 109, will include: * New backflow prevention requirements. * Redrawn flood maps, significantly expanded in Lower Manhattan. * Fuel oil storage changes. * Relocation of building systems (new construction.) * Triggers for when renovation/reconstruction must meet new requirements. * Temporary flood shields. * Mold resistant requirements. * Codes changes, Coastal Zone A changes. Case studies on buildings which have taken post-Sandy initiatives to deal with floods for code compliance and future protection will also be explored.
