Vista Skywall Systems completes fenestration and related façade metal work at Renaissance NY Chelsea Hotel at 112 West 25th St.

Manhattan, NY Vista Skywall Systems handled all the fenestration and related façade metal work at the newly constructed Renaissance NY Chelsea Hotel at 112 West 25th St. including a 37-story front façade curtain wall, rear façade windows, ground floor glass and entrances, skylight arcade roof, and more. The 40-story, 330-guest room hotel, owned by Lam Generation, is part of the Marriott Renaissance affiliate chain of hotels.

Vista sourced and installed a variety of façade materials and systems for the project. “The Renaissance Marriott Hotel project was a cornucopia of fenestration and metal systems and really gave Vista a chance to shine,” said Steve Powell, Vista’s president of operations.

“Our experience and professionalism were evident as we readily overcame the challenges presented by working with so many different materials. The Vista team was familiar with many of them, and we quickly learned and mastered those that were new. All involved are extremely pleased with the results,” Powell said.

Vista managed other project challenges in coordination with the developer’s construction team, addressing numerous design changes, material selection recommendations and value engineering initiatives to keep the construction process moving forward. The project site on a narrow high-traffic street presented logistic difficulties, and Vista managed material deliveries and staging efficiently.

On the hotel's south-facing rear facade, Vista supplied and installed high-performance aluminum windows provided by Crystal Windows & Door Systems. Using receptor, subsill, and sill cover accessories, Vista installed 144 large Crystal Series 8900 limited-opening in-swing casements combined with fixed Crystal Series 8910 side lights and some transoms up the height of the building. The windows were glazed with Guardian AG43 tempered low-E glass and argon filled insulated glass units.

At the hotel’s ground floor entrance, Vista supplied and installed glazed storefront, main entrance vestibule, and several large glass doors. Materials used include YKK’s storefront and swing doors, both of which were locally fabricated by Gamco Corp. Also, two large spans of Gamco’s own BF200 bi-fold door panels were incorporated into a storefront system in the hotel’s ground floor to provide lobby and lounge access to a rear courtyard and a multi-purpose interior space. All storefront components were finished in a dark bronze anodized paint finish and feature tempered insulated vision glass.

Vista also furnished and erected a custom Gamco SK2100 structural skylight arcade roof over the building’s front courtyard.

Other doors Vista sourced and installed include custom Gamco “Juliette-style” double French glass exterior doors installed in the 4th floor ballroom to provide access to outdoor balconies and add European flair. For the 37th floor rooftop bar outdoor area, Vista installed Model TS-19 lift-and-slide doors as well as TS-67 fixed and transom windows, produced by Panda Windows & Doors.

The hotel project further challenged Vista with supplying and installing two louver screen walls on the uppermost portion of the building to hide roof-mounted mechanical equipment. The aluminum ENC B609 louver screen manufactured by Airolite  was selected and used to erect the screen wall. One 3-sided wall was 18’ high and the other 4-sided wall was 4’ high.

Finally, Vista was responsible for the acquisition and installation of several large Airolite model SCH401 and SCH501 aluminum louvers to provide mechanical room ventilation at various points on the building’s façade.

Hotel specialty firm Lam Generation is the owner and developer of the West 25th St. hotel. Stonehill Taylor provided architectural design services for the project. Flintlock Construction was the general contractor.

Most people think of St. Patrick’s Day as a fun footnote on the calendar. In construction logistics, however, it’s a full-scale operational variable — especially if your work touches major metro areas with major parades and, let’s call it what it is, enthusiastic celebrants.
