Viola named vice president and complex bridge manager at WSP USA

Joe Viola, WSP USA

New York, NY Joe Viola has been named vice president and complex bridge manager for the northeast and southeast regions of WSP USA, formerly WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, a leading engineering and professional services consultancy.

In his new position, Viola, who will be based in WSP’s NYC office, will be responsible for pursuit and project delivery for complex structures, including long-span, movable and concrete segmental bridges, as well as bridge asset management. He will also serve as a pursuit/project manager and structures design manager. 

Mr. Viola has more than three decades of diversified experience in complex bridges and tunnels, including inspection, analysis, seismic retrofit, design and rehabilitation for clients in the United States and overseas. Prior to joining WSP, he was a vice president and project director for a large engineering consultancy, establishing the firm’s office in New York City.

“Joe Viola’s extensive experience in bridges, and his expertise in design-build project delivery, will be instrumental in expanding our bridge engineering practice in the Eastern U.S.,” said Bernard McNeilly, chief operating officer of the firm’s transportation and infrastructure sector. 

Viola earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Cooper Union and now serves as an adjunct professor at that school. A licensed professional engineer in seven states, he is also a member of numerous national and local professional societies, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, where he is a and past president of the Met Section, and the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York, where he serves on the continuing education and scholarship committees. He recently participated in the design reviews for three pedestrian bridges in Latin America for Bridges to Prosperity.

WSP USA has led the development, rehabilitation and inspection of thousands of bridges across the U.S. for more than a century. The firm is experienced in both steel and concrete bridges, including cable-stayed, arch, truss, segmental, suspension, girder, movable

and floating, as well as multi-level highway interchanges. Services range from feasibility studies and environmental permitting through preliminary and final design, to program and construction management.  Specialty services include inspection, rating, seismic analysis, rehabilitation design, and value engineering services.
