Queens, NY New York metro area glass processor Tempco Glass Fabrication (Tempco) celebrated its 10th anniversary since start up by cutting the ribbon on its newest production equipment, a glass lamination line. Representing an investment of over $1 million, the glass lamination line expands Tempco’s services significantly and opens new markets. The ribbon cutting event, held on November 21, was attended by trade customers, local business leaders, and state and local elected officials.
Borough president Donovan Richards, New York State senator Toby Stavisky, and New York State assembly member Ron Kim shared congratulatory remarks on Tempco’s 10th Anniversary. Richards, who represents the 2.2 million residents in the New York City Borough, presented a Citation of Honor to Tempco, noting the company’s success as a manufacturer in Queens and New York while other manufacturers have moved away. Stavisky and Kim noted the importance of jobs Tempco has brought to the community and its contribution to the economy of Queens and New York.
“Today we celebrate a journey as we mark Tempco’s 10th year of operation and the inauguration of our latest production equipment, a state-of-the-art glass lamination line,” said Tempco president Johnson Chen. “As we have demonstrated for 10 years, Tempco is committed to continuous growth. Every dollar earned is reinvested in our employees, our equipment, and our innovation to bring the best glass products to our customers.”
Chen described Tempco’s future plans, noting the glass lamination line is a stepping stone to launch the company to the next level of glass fabrication. Tempco is pursuing cutting edge glass and insulated glass technologies in collaboration with other companies, technical universities, NYSERDA, and the Empire State Development Corporation. Tempco is also partnering with Queensborough Community College for STEM programs and internships to attract a new generation to manufacturing. In addition, the company is planning continued growth with more production space, additional new equipment, and creating good paying, skilled US manufacturing jobs. Lastly, Tempco is exploring development of mobile platform applications to enhance assessment of existing and new windows and glass products in the field. All of these initiatives in the coming years will bring Tempco into the national spotlight as an innovating leader.
Glass lamination is a process to strengthen glass for added safety, security, impact resistance, and a level of sound attenuation. The lamination process places a special flexible PVB polymer film between two or more sheets of glass, which is heat and pressure treated to bond the film and glass together. Laminated glass is used in many products, such as automobile windshields, hurricane and high wind zone applications, security glass, glass stairways, railings, and canopies. The film can be colored or patterned for design aesthetics or to deter bird collisions.
Tempco’s new glass lamination line spans the entire length of the production floor, with a glass washing station that connects to a sealed “clean room” where the film interlayer is placed. Then the glass sheets are transferred on a rail trolley and placed inside a massive autoclave, where they are heat and pressure treated. Due to the weight of the new equipment and its energy requirements, significant structural reinforcements of the concrete production floor and electric service upgrades were made before the equipment was delivered and installed. Tempco is now able to produce laminated glass products for glaziers, glass shops, contractors, window, storefront, and curtain wall fabricators.
