Switzer Group leads multi-phase build out for AMC Networks: Redesign and restack its 10-floor corporate headquarters

Manhattan, NY When it came time for AMC Networks (AMCN) to redesign and restack its 10-floor corporate headquarters at 11 Penn Plaza, the company retained interior architecture firm Switzer Group to lead the multi-phase build-out. Complete gut renovations, including architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems were implemented for the client and its networks — AMC, BBC America, The Sundance Channel, IFC, IFC Films, WE Channel, and their executive group.

The 350,000 s/f renovation includes an additional 90,000 s/f of swing space while construction occurs. Inspired by the Art Deco vocabulary of 11 Penn Plaza, originally designed by Starrett & Van Vleck, AMCN’s new workspace juxtaposes existing architecture with the contemporary culture of the modern media brand. Consolidating, restacking, and standardizing AMCN’s brand, Switzer Group’s designers set out to create a fluid workspace for the network and its staff, one that would also reflect the media company’s culture.

The new workplace encompasses branding characteristics from each network, a multitude of collaborative settings, and various displays of original works. The AMCN palette uses traditional materials with a modern approach, including a contrast between charcoal and off-white with walnut, metal and soft stone with color and glass to contrast. Creating a balance between open and closed workspaces, Switzer Group designed private offices flanked by open work space to establish a hierarchy within the network, encouraging professional growth and upward mobility within the organization.

A staircase connecting the central floors offers connectivity between the networks that operate within. Accented by a lit feature wall, platform seating, and the iconic “Madmen” silhouette, the centralized staircase provides an internal destination for all to interact, brainstorm, and catch up throughout the work day. Meeting rooms are themed and designed to playfully express each individual network identity.

A town hall area with gallery space originates on the 18th floor, where staff can assemble, and features cameras to live-stream lectures to the entire facility. Throughout the rest of the office, additional ancillary spaces are outfitted with comfortable chairs and other finely-crafted furnishings, contributing to the larger sense of community encouraged throughout the space. The resulting space is both vibrant and engaging, satisfying the ever-changing needs of employees new and old.

Most people think of St. Patrick’s Day as a fun footnote on the calendar. In construction logistics, however, it’s a full-scale operational variable — especially if your work touches major metro areas with major parades and, let’s call it what it is, enthusiastic celebrants.
