Skanska USA completes new Hunter's Point Campus, I.S. / H.S. 404, in Long Island City

Skanska USA announced today that it has completed construction of Long Island City's Hunter's Point Campus, or I.S. / H.S. 404, a new 144,900 s/f, five-story educational building, which includes an intermediate/ high school and a District 75 school, for the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA). Skanska's project team ceremoniously joined New York City Department of Education Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm, New York City School Construction Authority CEO and President Lorraine Grillo, Representative Carolyn Maloney, and school faculty at the ribbon cutting to welcome students to their newly built facility. The school is part of Hunter's Point South, a project that will bring new residential, retail and community/cultural facilities to this section of Long Island City's waterfront. The Hunter's Point Campus represents one of the first projects to fuel this portion of the waterfront's revitalization. Skanska built Hunter's Point Campus to LEED® Silver equivalency according to NYCSCA's Green Schools Guide. The highly sustainable building includes two schools: a District 75 school, which delivers educational, vocational and behavioral support programs for students on the autism spectrum, and an intermediate/high school. "Skanska is thrilled to build another state-of-the-art, sustainable educational facility for the students of New York City," said Tom Webb, executive vice president and general manager of Skanska USA Building's Metro New York office. "The waterfront's transformation represents a new chapter for Long Island City and its residents and we are proud to contribute to the area's renovation while providing a school facility that suits students' individual educational needs." The Hunter's Point Campus provides students with space suitable for a well-rounded, hands-on learning experience. For example, the campus now features a shared competition gymnasium and auxiliary gym, complete with separate boys' and girls' locker rooms. It also offers a library, auditorium, and cafeteria, as well as specialized rooms for science and assisted learning. The District 75 school space features specialty rooms for daily living and occupational and physical therapy, and the campus shares a tech center, speech room, and staff development literacy room, as well as labs, music rooms and art rooms. Skanska USA Building began constructing the Hunter's Point Campus in fall 2010 by strategically clearing the site, which was once a 30-acre abandoned industrial waterfront. Construction remained on schedule and the school opened in time for the 2013 school year. Skanska USA has constructed highly sustainable schools both across the nation and in New York specifically. In addition to H.S. / I.S. 404, Skanska joined Mayor Bloomberg and NYCSCA for Beacon High School's groundbreaking last August. To complete Beacon High School, which is located in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, Skanska is converting an existing New York Public Library book storage facility.
