Schmitt of Certilman Balin honored by Touro Law Center's Alumni Association

The Alumni Association of Touro Law Center honored Michelle Schmitt, an associate in the real estate practice group at Certilman Balin, with the "Emerging Leader Award" at the 2013 Winter Reception held on January 24th.
Initiated in 2008, the alumni program recognizes alumni who have made great strides in the legal profession and are leaders in the Touro Law Center and surrounding community. The Emerging Leader Award honors a recent graduate who had made exceptional strides in his/her profession and has taken great initiatives during and after law school, serving as a role model for graduating students to follow.
Active in her community, Schmitt is a mentor in the Lawyers Involved in Kids' Education (LIKE) Program, which is affiliated with the Long Island Mentoring Partnership; volunteers at the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington; serves as vice president and legal counsel for her condo board; and served as a member of the Action Long Island Young Adult Alliance.
She earned her bachelor of arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Sociology from The George Washington University in 2004. From Touro College Jacob D. Fuschberg Law Center, she graduated cum laude, earning three CALI Awards for Academic Excellence, the National Association Women Lawyers Award, and the ABA/BNA Award for Excellence in Labor and Employment Law.
While at Touro, she was recognized for her exemplary contributions to student life, having served as president of the Women's Bar Association, vice president of the Public Interest Law Organization of Touro, election chair of the Student Bar Association, and competition editor of Touro's Moot Court Board. Schmitt continues to contribute to her alma mater as a member of Touro Law Center's Alumni Council and Mentor Program. She was featured as the "Alumn of the Month" in September 2009. In April 2012, she was awarded a Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award by Touro and in May 2012.
The Huntington Chamber of Commerce named her one of the top 30 young professionals under 30.A member of the American, New York State, Nassau and Suffolk County Bar Associations, Ms. Cohen is admitted to practice in the state of New York.
