The Rudin family has been awarded the 2012 Sustainable Design Award by Global Green USA for the design and sustainable redevelopment of 130 West 12th St., a pre-war residential building in Greenwich Village. William Rudin, CEO of Rudin Management, accepted the award on behalf of the Rudin family.
130 West 12th St. has been reconceived for contemporary living, bringing the benefits of sustainable design to the elegance of prewar architecture. CookFox Architects took a holistic approach to sustainability that focused on performance in key areas: energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, material selection, and water savings. 130 West 12th St. achieved LEED-NC Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The Sustainable Design Awards honor those who are "tearing down the walls" that stand in the way of a sustainable and secure world through their innovative design. Global Green USA is a national leader in advocating for smart solutions to climate change that benefit humanity by saving energy, reducing CO2 emissions, improving health, creating green jobs, and securing a more sustainable future.

State-of-the-art four pipe fan-coil system, giving residents the highest degree of individualized control and comfort while reducing energy consumption over standard systems by more than 40%.

An on-site natural-gas fired cogeneration plant providing a clean, efficient power source for 50% of the building's annual energy requirements.

The most sustainable elevators on the market, over 40% more energy efficient than standard elevators.

High-efficiency natural gas-fired condensing boilers that are 92% efficient, helping to reduce fuel consumption and improve the neighborhood's air quality.

Custom-designed casement windows with insulated glazing that are more energy efficient and achieve twice the thermal performance compared to the building's original steel sash windows.

ENERGY STAR® appliances used in the residences that are 20% more efficient than standard appliance alternatives.

An air filtration system delivering fresh outside air, and shielding residents from wind-borne pollutants and allergens.

The green roof reduces storm water runoff to mitigate combined sewer overflows, decreases the building's cooling load, and fights the heat island effect that burdens the city's energy infrastructure.

A two-stage filtering system to provide clean water to the building.

Water-saving plumbing fixtures, including dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets, reducing the use of water by more than 20%.
A customized secure wireless network that enables residents to have Internet access from the basement to the rooftop garden and throughout their own apartment. Applications ranging from energy management systems to remote monitoring and control of electrical appliances and consumption are used.

The 2012 Organizational Design Award went to Eve Ensler, Founder of V-Day, for the design of V-World, a sustainable farm to heal the women of the Congo by healing the Earth, and the greening of The City of Joy.

The Industrial Design Award went to Greif for the design of the PackH20 backpack, used to help ease the transport of water for the 1 in 7 people who live without access to water at home.

The award ceremony took place at Three Sixty Degrees at 10 Desbrosses St. in New York City. Presenters and guests for this year's awards included Donna Karan, Judith Light, Sam Champion, Carol Kane, and Maggie Grace.
