Public high school boys basketball championships brings economic gains to Binghamton

Binghamton, NY The launch of N.Y. State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Championship held from March 21-24 at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena delivered an economic boost to the community, marking the beginning of a three-year agreement that promises continued financial and cultural benefits for the region.

According to preliminary figures released by Visit Binghamton, the inaugural year alone generated an estimated $1.9 million in total economic impact. This includes revenue from accommodations, dining, transportation, shopping, and local services, with 19,900 visitors welcomed over the course of the event.

“Events like this are big for Broome County. They support our local businesses, energize our community, and put us on the map. We look forward to welcoming teams, families, and fans back over the next two years as we continue to show them everything our community has to offer,” said Jason Garnar, Broome County executive.

“We’re excited about the opportunity for our community to continue hosting N.Y. State Public High School Athletic Championships here in Broome County,” said Broome County legislature chairman Dan Reynolds.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight our area to student athletes and their families from all over New York State. A special thank you to Judi Hess and the team at Visit Binghamton for all their efforts to bring these events to our community!”

“Hosting the state championships brings real momentum to our city — from packed hotels and restaurants to packed stands at the arena. And as the home of the Class AA state champs, it couldn’t be a better time to celebrate basketball excellence and its impact on our local economy,” said mayor Jared Kraham.

‘’Visit Binghamton enjoys working on local events that help stimulate the economy through the influx of visitors. These State Championships are a great opportunity to collaborate with Section IV, local athletic directors, coaches and community members as we all strive to showcase this community as a premier destination” Lisbeth Koch of Visit Binghamton said.

Key highlights from Year 1:

- Over 19,900 attendees from across the region and beyond

- An estimated $1.9 million in direct spending in the local economy

- Boosted visibility and media attention for local businesses and tourism enhancing the city’s reputation as a vibrant destination for basketball and court sports.

Organizers and local officials expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and positive feedback from attendees, vendors, and local businesses alike. We look forward to hosting the Boys Basketball Championships in the next upcoming years.
