Perimeter Protection Products, based in Middlesex, N.J., recently introduced its innovative safety system to the market — a system that reduces perimeter exposure to laborers by 87% and cuts costs by 35% or more.
For years, OSHA has mandated perimeter guardrails for multi-story construction projects. But until now, the standard method has involved a labor-intensive process of welding angle iron, so-called "OSHA posts,"at perimeter and shaft locations. These steel posts support two horizontal lines of cable to provide safety at the building perimeter.
Upon completion of each building level, laborers must torch-cut each post and grind down the remaining post to floor level — a time-consuming job that, performed at the edge of the building, can also be hazardous.
The Perimeter Protection Products system offers an improved and completely redesigned approach: permanent threaded base plates and reusable screw-in steel posts.
On a completed building level, each post is simply unscrewed — in less than a minute, using no tools. The base plate remains on the roof perimeter which can be used later as a post-construction tie-off point.
Tom Murphy, the inventor of the system and founder of Perimeter Protection Products, said he designed the system to replace the outmoded method currently in use on most multi-story construction projects.
"On job after job,we saw how the standard guardrails caused unnecessary exposure to risk and unnecessary delays to the construction process," said Murphy, a 30-year veteran of in the roofing industry. "We knew there had to be a better way."
In fact, the Perimeter Protection Products system offers builders, owners,specifiers and others, several notable advantages over today's commonly used system:
* Cost savings: The system carries an estimated cost savings of 35% over an installed "OSHA post" system . For a typical 30-story building, that can mean savings of more than $140,000.
* Labor savings: Each post from Perimeter Protection Products can be installed or removed without tools in less than a minute. With 3,000 posts in a typical 30-story job, the improved system can save time that keeps a project on schedule.
* Greater safety: Because the system is designed for rapid installation and removal, it involves far fewer man-hours spent working in dangerous areas. In fact, the system decreases perimeter exposure of workers by 87% — a huge benefit to both builders and workers.
* A greener approach: Unlike standard OSHA posts, which are removed and discarded, the PPP system reuses steel posts on job after job, dramatically reducing waste and saving the energy needed to produce new steel posts.
* Post-construction benefits: The system leaves permanently installed base plates on a finished roof, giving the owner a built-in fall arrestor system that can be used for maintenance or window washing.
