O’Brien named chair of SIOR Professional Standards Committee

Manhattan, NY William O’Brien, SIOR, president of  M.C. O’Brien, Inc. was appointed chair of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) Professional Standards Committee at the recent Fall World Conference of SIOR.  In this position, O’Brien will oversee the committee’s management objectives and direct the activities of the committee to achieve implementation of these goals.

SIOR has set forth the following definitions and mission statements for The Professional

Standards Committee. The purposes of the Professional Standards Committee is to investigate, review, and evaluate ethics complaints and arbitration requests to determine their efficacy and the course required for the appropriate disposition of such matters (through grievance review boards which are formed as needed), to provide mediation and arbitration facilities for the resolution of financial and contractual disputes involving members (through mediators and hearing panels formed as needed); to conduct hearings for the adjudication of complaints involving allegations of professional misconduct by SIOR members (through hearing panels formed as needed); to evaluate and recommend changes to The SIOR Code and its related policies and procedures, to develop case studies and other interpretational aids to demonstrate the application of the Code in business and professional circumstances; and to oversee the Ethics Forum, which provides a pool of members who are interested and experienced in professional standards to fulfill SIOR’s grievance review and hearing panel needs. All SIOR member subscribe to the code and clients can be assured that SIOR members not only follow the law but go beyond the law as the most Professional and Ethical Practitioners of Commercial Real Estate.

O’Brien achieved his office designation in SIOR in 1991, at that time he was one of the youngest members in The Downstate and NYC Chapter to attain the coveted and hard to achieve designation and has served SIOR in various leadership positions including: President of the local Downstate New York Chapter of  SIOR. O’Brien first became involved in Professional Standards at the local level during his early years in the business at The Brooklyn Board of Realtors and has continued to refine his understanding of mediation and arbitration issues over the years.

O’Brien said, “Exposure to this forum has not only helped me expand the breadth and scope of my real estate practice, the best practices I have been exposed to have also helped me to protect my company and my client’s interests while maintaining the highest professional acumen”.
