Which project, deal or transaction was the "game changer" in the advancement of your career?
The game changer was the transition from private-sector retail and business clients to projects for publicly-funded agencies and not-for-profit organizations. Large publicly-funded clients provided a foundation on which to build a viable practice and a more stable workload. The first public project was a renovation for the New York State Office of General Services: The Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Community Center in Harlem. This led to more public work for several housing authorities, Newark public schools, and many others. Today we have contracts with the NYC SCA, Covenant House, and several New York State-funded non-profit groups.
What do you consider to be the most successful way to increase referrals?
Do a great job on current projects. Be involved and visible in professional organizations
What is your favorite tip for balanced living?
Take one workday a week for all the activities that require small blocks of time and can be conducted wherever possible and whenever needed. Example; take care of personal finances, health, friendships, and other relationships, community and professional event/activities.
