Mc Gowan was commissioned to replace roofing, install porch extensions and remove and replace deteriorated masonry work on buildings ranging from 145 to 175 years old. The project required careful planning and precision craftsmanship to restore buildings that had been neglected for years and developed water damage as a result of deteriorating roofing and masonry. Mc Gowan's construction work repaired the buildings both structurally and cosmetically, preparing them for use by the Trust for Governors Island.
The firm's organizational ability and communication skills were essential during each demolition phase, which required direction and approval from a building inspector. Often the inspector would be required to confer with the Trust for Governors Island regarding demolition and constructions operations, as well as the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission for permission to commence or continue work. Despite this process taking months to complete, Mc Gowan finished the project in keeping with the established schedule.
Mc Gowan was selected for this project based on the firm's expertise in historic preservation and its reputation for completing projects "on time and under budget." In addition, Mc Gowan has prior construction experience on Governors Island that has allowed the project management team to develop working knowledge of material transport to and within the property. This previous project experience on Governors Island increased Mc Gowan's project efficiency as buildings in need of repair were spread across an island containing 70 acres.
