MADGI designs 650 s/f Camper store at Westfield WTC Mall; Project team includes WB Engineers+Consultants and IBEX Construction
Studio Camper, the in-house store design team of the footwear brand Camper, and the New York City-based architecture and interior design firm of Montroy Andersen DeMarco (MADGI) unveiled the design of the new Camper store to be located at Westfield Group's Westfield World Trade Center mall. This project follows MADGI's design work for Camper's New York City flagship store at 522 Fifth Ave.
Camper will be among the first stores to operate at the 365,000 s/f shopping center, which is expected to open at the base of the new World Trade Center in the second half of this year. Surrounding the Santiago Calatrava-designed WTC transportation hub operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), the Westfield World Trade Center will be one of the largest malls in the borough.
MADGI principal Steven Andersen said, "The 650 s/f store represents Camper's creative and unconventional approach to designing its retail outlets around the world. The firm introduces different store concepts in order to create unique experiences for shoppers at each of its locations. The World Trade Center store's design is based on the idea of diorama-like exhibits, in which shoes serve as the focal artifacts."
The Camper store will be divided into a 400 s/f sales floor and a 250 s/f stockroom area with a manager's station. It will feature a 22-ft.-wide glazed storefront and entrance facing the mall's internal pedestrian walkway, hardwood oak plank flooring with satin finish, and gypsum board walls and ceiling painted gray. The signage will consist of an illuminated, red and white, metal Camper logo suspended from the ceiling above the storefront entrance and plywood logos attached to displays.
The interior fixtures will include seven-foot-high "diorama" merchandise display cabinets installed along the three perimeter walls of the store; a free-standing, five-by-five-foot window display unit; a gray six-by-three-foot display table installed in the center of the sales floor; and a bench. One of the displays will include a mirror. Transactions will be processed through handheld devices and the store will not house a cash wrap.
"The 'diorama' cabinets will consist of boxes of varying dimensions, intended to showcase individual pairs of shoes. The boxes will feature LED light strips hidden in the top sections of each display and replaceable backgrounds that will reflect changing seasons and inspirations for each shoe design," said MADGI project manager Ajay Waghmare, LEED AP. The fronts of aluminum display cabinets will be painted white. The shelves will rest on support elements installed on tracks. The central display table and the bench will be fabricated from plywood and lacquered gray. "All merchandising fixtures will be manufactured in Spain and assembled on-site in New York."
The lighting will be ambient and subdued in order to focus the shoppers' attention on shoe displays. The sales floor will be equipped with seven recessed downlight fixtures in the ceiling and two wall washers highlighting the columns.
In addition to MADGI, the project's design and construction team includes mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineer WB Engineers+Consultants and general contractor IBEX Construction.
The WTC Transportation Hub's concourse will connect visitors and shoppers to 11 different subway lines, the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail system, Battery Park City Ferry Terminal, the World Trade Center Memorial Site, WTC Towers 1, 2, 3, and 4, the World Financial Center, and the Winter Garden. It will represent the most integrated network of underground pedestrian connections in New York City.
Camper was founded in Majorca, Spain, more than 30 years ago. Today, it is one of the world's leading companies in the footwear design industry, with more than 300 Camper stores and 4,000 authorized points of sale in more than 50 countries.
