What are your predictions for commercial real estate in 2021?
I think that the site development market will continue to grow in 2021, especially on Long Island. People appear to be leaving NYC and relocating to more suburban areas, increasing residential building demand. As such, I expect a boom in the residential, infrastructure, and utility markets. However, I expect that the commercial market will flatten out. There may be a tendency by the local Planning Divisions to limit new commercial construction since many establishments will be forced out of business due to COVID. However, this may lead to redevelopment opportunities as we come out of the pandemic.

What was the most challenging part of working during the pandemic?
Working remotely can be bittersweet. Not having access to the resources at the office (printers, textbooks, design manuals, etc.) can set you back a bit. Not to mention you lose the face-to-face interaction with your peers and other engineers, which I feel is key to both self-growth and professional growth. However, I believe our staff overcame these issues delivering ingenuitive, cost-effective, and practical site development and civil engineering solutions throughout 2020, as typical in past years. Not having a full-size plotter at my disposal was sometimes problematic, as reviewing the final product on paper sometimes differs from the view on the computer screen. Also, what turned out to be quite a challenge for me while working from home was resisting the urge to sneak a snack from the kitchen.

What aspects of working from home did you enjoy most?
Being able to take a walk or go for a run at lunch was a nice way to break up my day. Exercise combined with the ability to focus without interruption led to an increase in my productivity.

What was your greatest professional accomplishment in 2020?
Being named as one of Long Island Business News 30 Under 30 was definitely a highlight of 2020, where I was recognized for my work ethic, accomplishments, and abilities.
