John Cameron of Cameron Engineering & Assoc. enjoys the challenges of continually "raising the bar"

John Cameron, Jr., P.E. is the founder and managing partner of the multi-disciplinary Cameron Engineering & Associates, LLP, with offices in Manhattan and Long Island. The firm which is completing its 24th year of business is one of the most diverse planning and consulting engineering firms in the New York Metropolitan Area, specializing in mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, environmental and security engineering; landscape architecture, planning and construction management. Having grown up in Long Beach, N.Y., Cameron cites his childhood highlight of beating out 13,000 other entrants in WNBC's "Yankee Bat Boy for a Day Contest." Cameron was able to share his dream with his school classmates, working with such Yankee greats as Mantle, Maris, Ford, Stengel, Richardson and others. Cameron received his formal education on Long Island where he received his mechanical engineering degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and his graduate degree in Environmental Science from Long Island University. A former collegiate high jumper, Cameron says that he has always enjoyed the challenges of continually "raising the bar" both in his personal life as well as his professional life. It is that quest for challenges that caused Cameron to decide to start his own consulting engineering business. "I never felt fulfilled working at other firms. I wanted to pursue my own goals. I wanted to make a difference!" Cameron says. With a staff of over seventy persons, the firm has grown in capability enabling Cameron and his firm to handle even more challenging projects. He attributes his success to hard work, determination and surrounding himself with talented and dedicated professionals, and most especially, "God's blessings." Cameron, a U.S. patent holder, prides himself on having his firm "LEED" the way in environmental and energy conservation designs made possible by over twenty five staff "LEED" accredited professionals. Cameron is proud of having numerous local, state and national awards won by the firm for its many projects. Whether it be on school design projects, such as the North Shore Hebrew Academy or the Glen Oaks School Campus (NYCSCA's largest school construction project), or the City of Glen Cove's Biological Nitrogen Removal Project (Long Island's largest wastewater nutrient removal project) or Mechanical Engineering Award Winners such as the Doubleday Bookspan Headquarters project or Metropolitan Realty's conversion of the former Endo Labs Building into the headquarters of Lifetime Brands; the firm continues to advance the state-of-the-art on engineering quality solutions to challenging technical and society problems. In addition to managing his engineering business, Cameron has always found time to share his talents in community, professional and religious organizations, having served in such capacities as trustee of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish, trustee of the Rockville Centre Community Fund, board member of SUNY Old Westbury College Foundation, State president of the New York Water Environmental Association, vice chairman of the New York League of Conservation Voters, to name a few. A recognized business leader on Long Island, Cameron presently serves as the chairman of the Long Island Regional Planning Council. The twelve-member council is dedicated to dealing with many of the challenges facing Long Island in remaining a strong economic force in the region, as well as capitalizing on the opportunities available to enable the Island to enhance the quality of life for all Long Islanders. The council is addressing such critical sustainability issues as economic development, affordable housing, social equity, environmental protection, energy management, transportation, education, public health and others. In his "spare time," Cameron is an avid surfer, citing his strong interests in sports, music, art and travel but most especially in spending quality time with his family including his wife of 36 years, Loretta and his children, Andrew and Christine.
