IREM NYC volunteers with Green City Force in the Bronx

Bronx, NY IREM NYC volunteers spent Saturday, August 1 with Green City Force weeding and mulching at New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Forest Houses EcoHub in the Morrisania section. Kawon Veazy, the EcoHub coordinator, taught us about the Three Sisters method of farming and about the importance of composting. Forest Houses hosts this two acre farm. Through Green City Force they educate young adults about urban agriculture and sustainability practices including bed preparation; transplanting seedlings; direct seeding; cultivating and harvesting crops. In addition, this training program gives participants the skills, certifications and experience required to begin a career in sustainability while servings NYC public housing communities. The vegetables grown on the farm are distributed to local residents; the fee - residents are asked to bring back kitchen and table scraps to be composted at the farm. Sustainability and eco-resiliency are truly at work here! Big thanks to Tonya Gayle and her team at GCF. We worked hard and enjoyed every minute.
