ICSC holds RetailGreen Conference and Trade Expo. September 15-16

The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) will hold the ICSC RetailGreen Conference & Trade Exposition on September 15-16 at the InterContinental Dallas Hotel. This conference will provide a view of how sustainability is changing the retail landscape-both for retailers and for retail real estate developers and operators. The conference will include general and concurrent sessions with industry experts speaking on the latest issues in sustainability, energy and environmental design; two optional green retail off-site study tours; trade exposition; reception in the trade exposition; breakfast roundtables and numerous networking opportunities. The Preliminary Program Monday, September 15: * Conference registration: Runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. * Continental breakfast and program overview: Runs from 7:30 to 8 a.m. * Your choice of optional green retail off-site study tour: Runs from 8 a.m. to noon (pre-registration required) Tour #1: Wal-Mart high efficiency (HE.2) store, Garland, Tex. Opened in May, this Wal-Mart Supercenter is one of the most efficient stores in the world, using 40% less energy than comparable Wal-Mart Supercenters and saves on water use. The tour of the store will educate attendees on a range of sustainable practices on high energy efficiency technologies for retail. The tour leader will be Don Moseley, PE, director of sustainable facilities, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Tour #2: Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm, Allen, Tex. Montgomery Farm offers 550,000 s/f of shopping and dining, plus office space and residential lofts, totaling 1.5 million s/f. This new mixed-use development is registered to seek LEED certification to become one of the first large retail developments in Texas. The tour leaders include: Terry Montesi, president and CEO of Trademark Property Co.; Billy Ware, AIA, LEED AP, president of Ware Architecture; the hon. Steve Terrell, mayor of Allen; and Robert Winningham, executive director of Allen Economic Development Corp. * Luncheon: Noon to 1 p.m. * Conference grand opening address by Lawrence Kilduff, chairman of the RetailGreeen advisory committee, and president of The Klduff Co., LLC, and keynote presentation "Climate Change and the Future of Energy" by David Houle of The Shift Age. Runs from 1 to 2 p.m. * Your choice of three concurrent sessions: 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Choose between: "Development and Operation Techniques for Fast-Track Your Green Strategies" moderated by Pamela Lippe, LEED AP, president of e4, Inc. Panelists are Jeffrey Bedell, LEED AP, VP operations at Macerich; Rob Keller, energy management and engineering services director at JC Penney; Joyce Mihalik, LEED AP, director of energy at Forest City Commercial Management; George Caraghiaur, VP, energy services at the Simon Property Group; and Lisa Loweth, CMD, group VP at General Growth Properties, Inc.; "New Sources of Investment Capital for Green Projects" moderated by Edward Lipkin, ICSC past trustee and president of EBLS Development, LLC. Panelists are Nicholas Stolatis, CPM, RPA, director, strategic initiatives at Asset Management and Leanne Tobias, principal at Malachite; or "LEED for Retail: The Various Choices for Retailers to Go Green" moderated by Justin Doak, manager, retail sector of the USGBC. What noteworthy transactions or deals from this year best exemplified key market trends or shifts? I would like to say there was an outstanding transaction for me this past year but 2024 was more a culmination of long-term relationships, most of which continued to transact. Deals were smaller in many cases but we saw robust leasing both on the agency side as well as on the tenant side.
